 G. Ridout - Fall Fair

W.A. Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante

Natasha Hall ,Violin, Martine Denbok, Viola

A. Dvořák - Symphony No. 9, From the New World

Antonín Dvořák wrote his Ninth Symphony while living in New York. He was inspired to write a work which incorporated ideas from his temporary home into his personal style. The result, with its evocative melodies and lush orchestration, has been a favourite from its first Carnegie Hall performance. Mozart was a fine violinist and loved the viola. He married these together in a wonderful Sinfonia that laid bare his ambition to leave Salzburg behind and conquer the imperial city of Vienna. Godfrey Ridout’s friendly personality and eclectic skill lead him to be an important figure in the Toronto music scene for several decades. His Fall Fair is an optimistic burst of champagne to start the evening and our season!

About the Show:

Juno awarding winning quartet joins Symphony of the Kootenays for wonderful evening of music

A unique evening that will bring together our symphony players and the Juno-Award winning The Fretless. A super-group of celebrated solo artists, The Fretless has been creating a singular and signature sound that dares to expand the idea of what a string music quartet can be — transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements that have quickly gained a dedicated following and accolades from around the world. Within what appears to be a simple and classical construct — two fiddles, a viola, and a cello — The Fretless has created a sound that is distinctly rich, multi-layered, and uniquely percussive. This tonal quality is pushing traditional music to new heights, producing a completely fresh approach to Folk music

About the Show:

Jenifer Higdon - Dance Card No. 1, 2 & 3

Jocelyn Morlock - Oiseaux bleus et sauvages

Samuel Barber - Knoxville: Summer of 1915

Rachel Casponi, Soprano

Johannes Brahms - Piano Concerto #1

Amy Zanrosso, Piano

We celebrate Women in Music with compositions and performances by women. Brahms’s mountain of a piano concerto was caught up in his relationship with Clara and Robert Schumann. Clara was one of the great pianists of her time, and she performed this piece along with many others during her career. Amy Zanrosso, one of our favourite and regular soloists, returns to the Kootenays to perform Brahms’ masterwork. We welcome Kamloops soprano Rachel Casponi to sing Barber’s evocative Knoxville, depicting life in the city’s soft summer. Jennifer Higdon’s Dance Card is an exuberant work which expresses her appreciation for the work required by string players to create beautiful performances. We honour the life of BC composer Jocelyn Morlock with her ode to the natural world.

About the Show:

The true story of Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton (Sir Anthony Hopkins), a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it's 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It's not until a live BBC television show, 'That's Life', surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children - now adults - that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.

On arrival in Paris, it soon becomes clear that Inger has a hidden agenda concerning a figure from her past, ultimately involving the entire group in her hunt for answers. ROSE is a film about love and care for each other, in spite of our differences, as much as it is a film about not judging a book by its cover.

A fictitious male stripper troupe (played by a cast of some of Canada’s best improvisational comedians) performs a sexylarious improv comedy show. They try to be sexy… it just comes out funny. Constantly grooving and gyrating in between scenes they banter with the crowd and perform their hilarious twist on improv sketches. They sing, they “dance”, and they are ready to make you laugh. Semi undressed and completely unscripted, The Comic Strippers take off their shirts and take on your suggestions to create a whole new genre of comedy.

Wildsight Presents

Bighorn Comedy

$30
April 22, 2023 at 8:00 pm

18A - Suitable for people 18 years of age or older

About the show:

Radium’s iconic Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep herd is in danger! But you can help!

Bighorn Comedy is partnering with Wildsight to raise money for Bighorn Sheep conservation. From April 21-23, some top comics will be touring the East Kootenay raising awareness and funds to help save the Bighorns.

Cranbrook’s own Sarah Stupar makes her return to the Key City stage, hosting this dynamite comedy show featuring an all star line-up:

Jarrett Campbell is a small town Canadian boy, on his way to the top. He’s so small town that he's actually from a county with no real towns at all.  Jarrett was nominated as the 2019 Breakout Artist of the Year at the Canadian Comedy Awards and his work has been featured on MTV, CTV, Comedy Network and CBC. He appeared on Roast Battle Canada and Just for Laughs in Montreal. Jarrett has been nominated for Best Writing in a Comedy Series, and Comedy Album of the Year at the 2020 Junos. A good Canadian boy, he’s also spent a few nights passed out in a field.

Brittany Lyseng is a nationally touring Stand-Up Comedian, Writer and Podcaster. Her comedy career began after 12 years as a tradesman, when she developed the desire to lift less and laugh more. You may have seen her on TV (CTV’s Roast Battles Canada), heard her on the radio (CBC’s The Debaters), but you can also probably catch this Alberta girl down at the Legion, having a beer. Her 2019 album debuted at #1 on iTunes and was followed with appearances at Just For Laughs. Most recently she was featured in Reader’s Digest magazine and was graced with a 2022 Canadian Screen Awards nomination.

As for Sarah, she was born and raised in Cranbrook, but has lived in Vancouver, Montreal and now Calgary, and she has been doing stand up since 2012. While living in Cranbrook from 2019-2021, Sarah worked as a flag person on the traffic circle in Radium, where she became obsessed with Bighorn Sheep. She decided to combine her love of stand up with her love of Bighorn Sheep in efforts to raise money for conservation efforts, and is so excited to bring this show to the East Kootenay.
