 G. Ridout - Fall Fair

W.A. Mozart - Sinfonia Concertante

Natasha Hall ,Violin, Martine Denbok, Viola

A. Dvořák - Symphony No. 9, From the New World

Antonín Dvořák wrote his Ninth Symphony while living in New York. He was inspired to write a work which incorporated ideas from his temporary home into his personal style. The result, with its evocative melodies and lush orchestration, has been a favourite from its first Carnegie Hall performance. Mozart was a fine violinist and loved the viola. He married these together in a wonderful Sinfonia that laid bare his ambition to leave Salzburg behind and conquer the imperial city of Vienna. Godfrey Ridout’s friendly personality and eclectic skill lead him to be an important figure in the Toronto music scene for several decades. His Fall Fair is an optimistic burst of champagne to start the evening and our season!

A super-group of celebrated solo artists, The Fretless has been creating a singular and signature sound that dares to expand the idea of what a string music quartet can be — transforming fiddle tunes and folk melodies into intricate, beautiful, high-energy arrangements that have quickly gained a dedicated following and accolades from around the world. Within what appears to be a simple and classical construct — two fiddles, a viola, and a cello — The Fretless has created a sound that is distinctly rich, multi-layered, and uniquely percussive. This tonal quality is pushing traditional music to new heights, producing a completely fresh approach to Folk music

Jocelyn Morlock - Oiseaux bleus et sauvages

Samuel Barber - Knoxville: Summer of 1915

Rachel Casponi, Soprano

Johannes Brahms - Piano Concerto #1

Amy Zanrosso, Piano

We celebrate Women in Music with compositions and performances by women. Brahms’s mountain of a piano concerto was caught up in his relationship with Clara and Robert Schumann. Clara was one of the great pianists of her time, and she performed this piece along with many others during her career. Amy Zanrosso, one of our favourite and regular soloists, returns to the Kootenays to perform Brahms’ masterwork. We welcome Kamloops soprano Rachel Casponi to sing Barber’s evocative Knoxville, depicting life in the city’s soft summer. Jennifer Higdon’s Dance Card is an exuberant work which expresses her appreciation for the work required by string players to create beautiful performances. We honour the life of BC composer Jocelyn Morlock with her ode to the natural world.

Sonic Concerts Live presents:

Bellamy Brothers - The Love Still Flows
Western Canada Tour with opener Son of John

April 25, 2024 at 7:30 pm
Rated G-Suitable for all ages

Tickets: Regular $58.50

About the show:
THE BELLAMY BROTHERS: THE LOVE STILL FLOWS… Howard and David continue to prove that the trail they’ve ridden to fame has been as unique as their music itself—music that is now celebrating 40 years of success.

The road that started on the pop music charts in the ‘70’s, took a winding turn into country music in the ‘80’s, paving the way for duos to come, such as Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry, Big & Rich, and previously—The Judds. But before the road forked into country, the musical odyssey of brothers Bellamy started creatively smoldering in their home state of Florida, before exploding nationally amidst the ’70’s pop music culture of L.A.

The brothers first official gig was in 1968, playing a free show with their father at the Rattlesnake Roundup in San Antonio, Florida. They honed their early skills playing black clubs throughout the south, and singing backup for artists such as Percy Sledge, Eddie Floyd, and Little Anthony & The Imperials. Within a few months, the brothers moved north, immersing themselves and their rock/country sound in the Atlanta market, where the Allman Brothers were the emerging kings of the music world.

With the dawning of the Age of Aquarius on the horizon, and America embroiled in a smoke haze of drugs, civil unrest and an unpopular war, The Bellamy's music picked-up the hard driving edge that bespoke the times. Songwriting had become David Bellamy’s drug of choice during the long road gigs he and Howard were regularly pulling bodies and equipment to and from. It was his songwriting that was posed to soon provide the duo a national breakout.

The break came in the form of the hit, “Spiders & Snakes,” written by David and recorded by Jim Stafford. The song became a smash, eventually selling more than three million units worldwide. It became the catapult that rocketed the brother onto the L.A. music scene. Young and impressionable, Howard and David fell into the musical circle of the greats of the day: Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and Van Morrison, as well as West Coast based country rockers like Poco and the Byrds.

It was a creative shoe that fit.

Now known by their music and the company they were keeping, The Bellamys officially lifted off the launch pad in 1976 when their single, “Let Your Love Flow,” became an instant smash in both the U.S. and Europe. It stayed on the international charts long enough to build a huge international fan base for the hip young brothers that endures to this day. In Germany alone it perched at #1 for more than two months. The love was indeed flowing as The Bellamys jammed for audiences on their sold-out concerts and shared stages with the likes of Loggins & Messina, the Doobie Brothers, and the Beach Boys., with their patented blend of rock/country music.

True to their musical roots, their style and their songwriting was moving steadily more towards their raising. By the late ‘70’s The Bellamys were emerging on the country charts with another bona fide smash. “If I Said You Had A Beautiful Body (Would You Hold It Against Me),” originally scrawled on a dinner napkin by David, rocketed them to the top of the country charts the way “Let Your Love Flow,” had done in the pop market just a few years earlier. It proved to be the first of a string of fourteen #1 singles in the U.S. alone.

Success followed success: “Dancing Cowboys,” “Sugar Daddy,” “You Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie,” “Lovers Live Longer,” “Do You Love As Good As You Look,” “Redneck Girl,” “For All The Wrong Reasons,” “I Love Her Mind,” “I Need More Of You,” “Old Hippie,” “Too Much Is Not Enough,” “Kids Of The Baby Boom,” and “Reggae Cowboy” and “Crazy From The Heart,”…all have lined the corridors of the Bellamy’s musical history and their walls with platinum and gold.

Along the way, Howard and David created a patent on the newly cool “duo” category in country music. In the era of the 2000’s, The Bellamy Brothers hold the record in both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and the Country Music Association Awards (CMA) for the most duo nominations. Numerous Grammy nods have also been directed toward the brothers.

Internationally, the story has been the same—though the titles may be different. The Bellamys have released more than two-dozen hit songs outside the U.S. that were never released here. With a sharp eye on the songwriting skills that have been the bedrock of their success, Howard and David concur that their career is unique in their international finesse for matching their songs to the market.

“For the international releases, you have to have a strong melody,” notes David. “The lyric is very important, but internationally the melody is something fans can lock into, even if they can’t understand the lyrics.” Howard and David continue to perform and film TV specials in Europe and around the world.

These days when the subject turns to touring, The Bellamys are showing a new generation of country music how it’s done. “We’re old road dogs,” grins Howard when asked about the motivation behind the brothers 200 plus concert dates each year. Adds David: “Our live draw is bigger than it was in the ‘80’s. I think the same people that grew up with us and with our music in the ‘60’s and ‘70’s obviously have raised a whole new generation of Bellamy fans who started toddling to our music. Now they’re turning up at our concerts as college kids, who are really turned on and tuned in to us and our music….it’s a great feeling.”

On the infrequent off days from the road, Howard and David head the bus back to their 150-acre family ranch in Darby, Florida just north of Tampa. A working ranch, the spread consists of Purebred Charlois cattle and quarter horses. Amid a land lush with fruit trees, ancient oaks and crepe myrtles, three generation of the Bellamy family, headed by David and Howard’s mother, Frances, populate the homes clustered in the family compound.

The Bellamy Brothers latest project is their new album titled '40 Years' is an ambitious project that celebrates their career with 20 of their biggest hits and then adds 20 brand new songs in this 2 cd anniversary collection.

About the Show

Jenny Allen

Sensual, frank and fearless", said Calgary Fast Forward Magazine about
performing songwriter Jenny Allen. Her first solo recording, 'Something to
Say', produced by Canadian folk legend Valdy, led to invitations at major
festivals both in Canada and the US. and widespread critical acclaim.
Opening for the likes of Taj Mahal, Jennifer Warnes, and Shawn Colvin, her
music invited comparisons to Mary Chapin Carpenter and Tracy
Chapman, swinging effortlessly between a rich variety of styles such as
roots, blues, pop and rock.

On the heels of her acclaimed sophomore release 'If I Fall', Allen joined
forces with Calgary-based songwriters Lin Elder and Lori Reid. Their trio
'The Fates' became one of Albertas most beloved concert acts, touring
extensively throughout Western Canada over nine years in support of their
three studio CD releases, receiving extensive airplay and charting at #2 for
best album of 2008 on CKUA Radio.

From 2012 to 2015 Jenny teamed up with fellow singer/songwriter Leslie Alexander, and what started as a double bill quickly became 'Allen and Alexander', a high energy, winsome duo, the two supporting each other vocally and instrumentally.

Continuing to write and perform as a solo artist, Allen released her third solo project   "Blanket" in the spring of 2012. For her many fans it's no exaggeration
to say the record was highly anticipated, featuring production by BCCMA Producer of the Year John MacArthur Ellis (Ridley Bent, Leeroy Stagger) and a set list of original songs well-seasoned with experience, insight, and emotional impact. Backed by Pat Steward on drums, Rob Becker on bass, John Ellis on guitars, and Mel Smith, Pete Loughlin and tour mate Leslie Alexander on vocals, the album is garnering rave reviews, leaving one critic to say, "Blanket is alive from the onset, then begins to build into a class, or category of its own.' (Victory Music)
Currently working on new material and collaborating with long time musical compadre Peter Loughlin Jenny will be recording  a new solo project in the fall of 2021. soon to appear clean across Canada and the US, captivating audiences with her songs
and stage presence, clearly demonstrating she's a musical force to be
reckoned with.

About Dave Prinn:

Dave hails from Montreal and spent the bulk of his adult life globetrotting with the Canadian Military.  In his travels he was exposed to many genres of music and played with a variety of performers in a number of styles of music from a cappella vocal ensembles to folk trios and classic rock and roll bands.  His heart lies in the story and as a result his go-to music is the ballad with a mix of original and cover tunes.  He moved from Alberta to Cranbrook in 2007 and he now calls the East Kootenay “Home”.

About Heather Gemmell:

In the realm of mountain music, Heather Gemmell stands out with her signature style — a flat-brimmed hat, cascading golden locks, and an infectious smile that radiates through her performances. From Kimberley BC, A trailblazer in her own right, Heather secured the prestigious CBC Searchlight 2022 Fan Choice Award for her compelling song "NorthStar Burning," a poignant narrative that resonated deeply across western Canada. The song delves into the devastating arson that crippled her hometown ski hill and local economy, capturing the hearts of thousands.

Heather's songwriting spans the emotional spectrum, a skill complemented by her diverse instrumental abilities that have become the hallmark of her musical identity. Not just a musician, but a one-woman band, Heather seamlessly blends traditional instruments with a contemporary flair, creating a stage presence that sets her apart. With a radiant energy, captivating stage performances, and undeniable talent, she has redefined what it means to be a solo artist.

Boasting three full-length albums, Heather weaves a tapestry of stories that captivate listeners with each phrase. Her musical journey, she notes, is a perpetual quest for tone and stage sound, an ongoing exploration fueled by a relentless passion for her craft. Her setup is unparalleled — an acoustic guitar, clawhammer banjo, electric lap steel, and overdriven harmonica rack mic, and a uniquely designed double-chambered cajon, all part of a mesmerizing performance that involves drumming with her feet, playing multiple instruments, and triggering loops with precision. As a Seydel Harmonica endorser, she never leaves behind her arsenal of mouth harps and Rackit 2.0 microphone.

Heather's uniqueness extends beyond her instrumentation; it permeates her evolving persona. Over her fifteen-year career, she has become a powerhouse in the East-and West Kootenay musical landscape, garnering respect and acclaim. Her dedication to music is palpable every time she takes the stage, delivering performances packed with what she describes as "Roots & Blues-grass," a fusion of Canadian/Americana flavor. Always one to engage with her audience, Heather steps off her kick drums, mingles with the crowd, and distributes hand-made percussion instruments during her shows. With a new wireless instrument system enhancing her interactions, her performances are a captivating, eye-catching experience that transcends age barriers. Heather Gemmell is not just a musician; she is a dynamic force shaping the future of mountain music with her unparalleled talent and evolving artistry.

In just seven years of recording and performing as Twin Flames, the duo has accumulated 44 music awards and nominations.

Twin Flames offer a memorable show with the perfect blend of music, comedy and thought-provoking stories. Their synchronicity and love shine through at every show.

Recipients of 4 Canadian Folk Music Awards, 3 Native American Music Awards, 3 Summer Solstice Indigenous Music Awards and the 2022 Capital Music Award (Group of the year.) Jaaji and Chelsey met on-set during the filming of APTN's TAM in 2014. In 2015 they created the band Twin Flames.

Indie rock, synth rock, and folk pop are just a few of the labels critics have assigned to the music of Twin Flames. Their unique style and sound make it difficult to narrow their work to a single genre.

Twin Flames create sonic soundscapes using Indigenous spirit flutes, traditional drums, and western instruments. They craft enticing musical arrangements, standout harmonies, and beautiful rhythmic patterns. The result is a warm, perfect blend of sounds. In addition, Twin Flames shares a genuine love for songwriting that stands out lyrically and melodically for the world to hear.

From the beginning, this husband and wife duo has chosen to let their music speak for itself.  Jaaji (Inuk from Nunavik and Mohawk from Kahnawake) and Chelsey June; Settler (with Algonquin, Métis, Cree heritage), write songs delivered through a mix of English, French and Inuttitut.

A revered powerhouse couple well on their way to becoming a Canadian household name, the sky seems to be no limit for this pair.

Chelsey June and Jaaji have shared the stage with many session musicians, but the band, at its core, is made up of Chelsey and Jaaji.

About the Artist

"I live in the rural mountains of British Columbia and have the privilege of being a full time mother to three incredible children. Motherhood is my deepest work.  Though I often fail, I endeavour to live deeply, truthfully, simply, and beautifully. My work as a performance artist, and specifically as a Storyteller of African and African Diasporic Folklore, is woven into this endeavour. It is an extremely life giving, creative practice. Discovering, shaping and sharing tales keeps me steeped in the awareness of our common humanity; of our deeply threatened need for slowed-down, unplugged, heart to heart connection with one another and with the world around us; and of our inherent orientation toward something deep and divine. In short, as I experience it,  Storytelling is a deeply spiritual act. It is not only a way of communing with others, it is a way of reaching out to God my Creator, to my ancestors, and to the Mothers that went before me. It is my way of coming Home. If I am so blessed, I will share tales until I am buried in the ground. And perhaps even thereafter. What a glorious thing that will be."

- Shayna Jones, we are STORYFOLK

"Shayna Jones…can only be described as a force of nature. She’s a river, pent-up behind a dam, that upon bursting leaves us devastated." — Lilian Jasper, Two Cents Two Pence Reviews

About the Show:

The true story of Sir Nicholas 'Nicky' Winton (Sir Anthony Hopkins), a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it's 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn't able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It's not until a live BBC television show, 'That's Life', surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children - now adults - that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.

About the Show

Lovebullies

The Lovebullies lineup of Paul Jahn, Joni Brent, Chantal Vitalis, Andrea Revel and Caroline Connolly have been playing together for the better part of two decades. Their Vintage-pop-rock vibe, combined with a high octane visually dynamic stage show, makes them favourites of the Calgary music scene. They have entertained crowds at Juno Fest, Tour of Alberta, South Country Fair, East Coulee Music Festival, Women's March, AMPIA Awards, Calgary's White Hat Awards, CFMF at Pride drive-in, Calgary Folk Festival's Block Heater and many other great events. Along with Kris Demeanor, they also recorded their cover of Gillian Welch's "Tear My Stillhouse Down" for Calgary Folk Festival's 40th Anniversary record Cover Art, recorded at the National Music Centre.

They've had the pleasure of warming up the stage for acts such as The Beach Boys, Alex Cuba, George Canyon, Big Sugar and The B-52's. Connolly and Vitalis compositions have won awards and accolades and have been featured in television, feature film and music videos. If you're a fan of Stampede City Sessions you may have seen The Lovebullies half hour special on PBS.

In January of 2023 The Lovebullies made their second TV appearance playing themselves on one of Canada's longest running and much loved show Heartland! The episode featured two original Lovebullies songs, and a speaking role for Caroline (speak Caroline speak!) in a scene with Canada's favourite Grandpa, Jack Bartlett! As well, The Lovebullies recorded an original song, at world renowned OCL Studio, written by the Heartland team that was featured in the show. "The Truth Don't Lie" can be heard on all your favourite streaming sites!

Their third studio album Friend is dedicated to Kevin Friend Herring, their longtime lead guitar player who had to depart for The Great Gig In the Sky. Friend features The Lovebullies in full force, with Kevin's dynamic, creative guitar playing front and centre. We love and miss you every day, Kevin - the album turned out just like you wanted: "More bully! Less love!" From the opening, rocking riffs of the first track, listeners can hear that The Lovebullies don't have time to faff around. We'll sell you the whole seat but you'll only need the edge of it!

Fraser & Gabrielle
Fraser Armstrong began writing songs more than 35 years ago. In that time he has made two albums, one reaching the top 20 on the Canadian college charts. He has operated an award winning independent record label (Blue Leaf Music) for a dozen years beginning in 1999 and started the careers of George Canyon and Dean Brody. He has spent much of the last two decades teaching and touring with his family band “In Pursuit”, which he still does when he can coral his sons and daughter. He lives in Kimberley BC where he continues to teach and develop young talent.

Gabriel Driscoll is an emerging singer/songwriter. At the age of 12 she became the regular anthem singer for the Kimberley Dynamiters and began studying voice and guitar. Now at 14 she has performed many shows in the area. With her band of other young musicians “The Rockets” she can be seen regularly at the various public houses in the Kimberley area.

About the Show

Toronto Star’s “Must See” Critic’s Pick

A pie... A face.... How hard can it be? British comedy darlings James & Jamesy don clown attire and attempt to conquer this classic of comedy. They fail.

Troubled and determined, the two dive into the depths of their psyche, mining memories for clues about what’s holding them back.

Rich in wordplay, comic physicality, and cleverly crafted interactive elements, Easy as Pie is uproarious fun, yet it is the duo’s boundless imagination and endearing chemistry that provide the real magic and heart of this play.

“Easy as Pie is a showcase of the duo’s stunning mastery of physical comedy and their uncanny ability to marry their abilities to the exploration of psychological themes that are at once serious and hilarious. This is simply an amazing show.”

Make ‘em Laugh “Zaniac” Puts Zing! into Family Comedy

When was the last time you laughed as hard as your kids?

With captivating amounts of energy, Alex Zerbe moves like a rubber band from one end of the stage to the other. Beatboxing, juggling, dancing, singing, music and magic are just a few of the things that led Piers Morgan of America’s Got Talent to call Alex, “The total package.”

The “Professional Zaniac,” whoʼs been cracking jokes onstage for almost 15 years, zigzags between physical stunts and non-stop comedy. During the show vegetables are sliced in half by flying playing cards, flaming torches and bowling balls are juggled with ease and every audience volunteer leaves the stage in triumph.

A self-described “human cartoon,” his show isnʼt only for the kids in the family. “I try to make my show like the movie Shrek, super entertaining for the kids but there’s a whole other level of comedy for teens and adults.” says Zerbe.

So what are you waiting for? It’s about time to treat the entire family for a laugh! Get tickets for the entire family today!

ALAN DOYLE ANNOUNCES 2024 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR

“WELCOME HOME” – DOYLE’S FIRST SINGLE OFF UPCOMING NEW ALBUM – OUT THIS FRIDAY

Alan Doyle and his Beautiful Beautiful Band will hit the road in the new year for an extensive North American tour. The run starts on February 21 in Kelowna, BC, and will take him across Canada and the U.S. for 44 shows, wrapping up on May 18 in Homer, NY. Indie rock singer-songwriter Adam Baldwin will be Doyle’s special guest on all dates. Pre-sales begin this Wednesday, with the general on-sale set for this Friday at 10 AM local time.

Also on Friday, Doyle will release “Welcome Home,” the first single off his upcoming album, due out in 2024. More details on the album release will be unveiled in the coming weeks.

“Welcome Home” is a fiercely rollicking, Celtic-y, fiddle-and-accordion-goosed party track that Doyle wrote with country-roots artist Donovan Woods and Josh Kelley. "Welcome Home. The words we dream to say when loved ones have been gone," says Doyle. "I hope this speaks to everyone of dreaming to get all hands home, and to sing loud when they do."

Doyle is a multifaceted singer-songwriter, going on three decades strong as a musician – first as a member of the much-celebrated band Great Big Sea and now as an internationally acclaimed solo artist. His CV is extensive — he is a thrice-published author, a film and TV actor-producer with multiple major credits, and the co-producer of the recently released, 20-song Ron Hynes tribute album, Sonny Don't Go Away. Yet the wildly popular musician from Petty Harbour, Newfoundland, remains most electrifying before a live audience, abetted by his ace band. “I am the luckiest guy in the world,” Doyle says. “It’s such a privilege to stand among those players on stage.”

About the Show

Since the band was formed in the summer of 2010, the High Bar Gang has been bringing its unique take on old time bluegrass to the people of Western Canada.

Vocal harmony is key to the band’s sound, and the blend of Shari Ulrich, Wendy Bird and Kirby Barber along with guitarist Barney Bentall and banjo player Dave Barber is simply stunning. Supported by Rob Becker on bass, and Colin Nairne on guitar and mandolin, the band’s repertoire stays firmly rooted in the golden age of bluegrass music with songs by the likes of Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers and Del McCoury.

Highlights for the High Bar Gang include opening for Canadian music icons Blue Rodeo at Vancouver’s Malkin Bowl, and the many sold out shows they have played throughout Western Canada, including the prestigious Cedar Creek Winery Concert series and the Raven’s Cry Theatre in Sechelt. From the Brackendale Art Gallery and Victoria’s famous Butchart Gardens to Vancouver’s International Jazz Festival and San Francisco’s legendary Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the band has built a solid reputation for their wonderfully upbeat brand of bluegrass and stories.

Are you ready for a night of the old time bluegrass music with the High Bar Gang featuring Shari Ulrich, Wendy Bird, Kirby Barber, Barney Bentall, Dave Barber, Rob Becker, and Colin Nairne! Get tickets to the show today!

About Wild Honey:

Wild Honey is an all-female roots trio based in the East Kootenay region of spectacular British Columbia. The band of busy mothers has been together for a decade, and has just released their second album, an EP titled ‘Let’s Be Cowboys’. Recorded and produced by Canadian music legend Barney Bentall, the songs are compiled and delivered with gentle grace. Always inspired by their mountain towns and love of the outdoors, Shelby, Jessica, and Laura were searching for a sound that celebrated these passions. The album is a love letter to their daughters – 8 in total – celebrating their unique strengths and ability to shatter the stereotypical female roles expected of them. The honest, fragile lyrics in songs like ‘Let it Roll’ and ‘Caged Bird’ tenderly highlight the mental health crisis faced by so many after the isolation of the pandemic. ‘Fly Angel’ is a bold and cheeky answer to John Prine’s classic ‘Angel from Montgomery’. Overall, the album is a musical promise to hold on - hope is not lost. To quote from track 3, ‘Let it Roll’, “The sun will rise, and time will heal your soul.”
