About Ballet Kelowna: taqəš and Other Works

Set to several songs by Polaris Prize-winning composer and singer Jeremy Dutcher, taqəš (tawKESH) which means "to return something" in Ayajuthem, follows the traditional story Raven Returns the Water,” centred around p̓oho (raven) and walθ (frog). Cameron Fraser-Monroe brings his artistic mind in creating this inspiring and powerful show.

This show includes Guillaume Côté’s riveting Bolero, and a new, uplifting ensemble work by Robert Stephen.

Kootenay Dance Academy, formerly known as Kimberley Dance Academy, has provided qualified dance instruction in the East Kootenays since 1991, offering a wide range of classes including tap, ballet, pointe, lyrical/contemporary, jazz, street jazz, hip-hop, musical theatre, stretch and conditioning as well as acrobatics. Classes are available to all students ages 3 years to adult, offers both recreational and competitive programs and is proud to have been the first to establish a competitive dance team in the East Kootenays.

The young dancers from Kootenay Dance Academy are appreciative of this opportunity and feel very privileged to be opening for this evening's performance for Ballet Kelowna.

Show Opener: Aspire Dance Academy

Aspire Dance Academy is a professionally accredited dance studio offering training in ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre and acro. Offering both recreational and competitive programs, classes are available for students ages 3 years to adult. Aspire Dance encourages a balanced lifestyle where the health and welfare of every student is important. Our focus is on a caring environment where talent can develop and grow. The understanding of teamwork, cooperation and compassion is our key focus. Our teachers and students are enthusiastic and enjoy sharing their love of dance.

Aspire Dance would like to extend a huge thank you to Ballet Kelowna and Key City Theatre for this exciting opportunity. We are blessed to live in this community!

 This contemporary piece brings awareness to the everyday struggles of school-aged youth. It inspires kindness, empathy and understanding that can mean so much to students impacted by bullying.
