About the Show

Presented by Key City Theatre

A rebellious collision of grunge, queer imagination and ’90s nostalgia that asks: what if Kurt Cobain had been trans?

What if the icon one generation lost could have become the trans role model another generation needed?

In No Apologies, acclaimed trans artist Emma Frankland radically reimagines Nirvana’s legendary 1993 MTV Unplugged concert. Part rock show, part spoken-word performance and part act of queer mythmaking, this bold new work blurs memory, fantasy and cultural history.

Drawing on her own experience of coming of age in the 1990s, Frankland considers what Kurt Cobain meant to a generation—and imagines how different the world might have felt if its most famous grunge icon had been able to speak a trans truth.

Funny, furious and deeply personal, No Apologies explores identity, visibility, grief and our need to find ourselves reflected in the people we admire. It is not a biography or a claim about Cobain’s identity, but an unapologetic act of imagination: a chance to revisit the past and dream of the future that might have followed.

Content advisory: This production discusses suicide, transphobia and experiences of not being accepted. It contains strong language and loud music.
